Best Hair Extensions Brushing Guide

Getting hair extensions is a great way of giving your hair extra length and volume, but it can bring with it some problems. How do you keep those long, flowing locks from becoming tangled and matted? How do you retain the shine and lustre? Thankfully, there’s now no need to stress — help is here, all thanks to our signature hair extension brush range.

No matter what sort of hair extensions you have in place — wefts, keratin bonds, tape-ins or clip-ins — they will require extra special care.

That’s why we’ve designed a brush for hair extensions that will keep you tangle-free and looking at your best for longer. You don’t have to worry about shedding or bonds becoming weaker — our  hair extension brush range is gentle and flexible, gliding through all hair types without pulling, snagging or matting.

Tips for brushing hair extensions

Start at the ends and work up

If you start brushing at the tips of your hair and then make your way up to the roots, you’ll minimise how much pulling there is, which not only reduces stress on the extension bonds but also cuts down on breakage and shredding.

Use a specially designed brush for hair extensions

Common or garden brushes are not really cut out for hair extensions. What you really need is a hair extension brush with bristles and pins that won’t snag, and which helps to distribute your scalp’s natural oils. Naturally, we recommend The Original Happy Hair Brush, Happy Detangler Paddle 2.0 or The Mother Brush!

Support your hair extension bonds

Before you start brushing, we recommend taking hold of your hair with one hand just above where the extensions are attached. As you detangle, this will give the bonds some extra support and stop them becoming loose or getting pulled out.

Brush before shower and bed

It’s a good idea to take the time to detangle your extensions before you take a shower and wash your hair, as wet hair can get knotted and matted more easily than when it’s dry. Brushing before you go to bed is also a good idea, as things can get tangled up pretty quickly when you’re asleep.

Brush regularly, but be gentle

If you want to keep your extensions looking smooth and healthy, brushing at least a couple of times a day is the way to go. But remember, don’t use force if you need to detangle instead, go slowly and use soft, downward stokes using a hair extension brush.

Looking for the right brush for hair extensions?

We’ve created a range of unique brushes that are perfect for brushing and detangling all types of hair extensions.

The Original Happy Hair Brush

This brush actually combines five different brush features — paddle, wide comb, vent, boar bristle and long pins — into one superior solution. They work together to smoothly detangle wet or dry hair without any of the pain that usually comes with getting rid of knots, and without pulling on your tape or keratin bonds.

Happy Detangler Paddle 2.0

Beautifully designed with a solid, one-piece body and curved paddle, the Happy Detangler Paddle 2.0 Brush features hand-dipped soft nylon tips that make unravelling knots easy, while the boar bristles help to distribute the scalp’s natural oils. When it comes to choosing a hair extension brush, our new detangler is hard to beat.

The Maxi /Mother Brushes

The longer bristles and pins mean that The Maxi Brush and the Mother Brush are ideal for hair extensions as it won’t pull them out, while the one-piece handle means there’s no chance of the brush getting trapped in long hair. It’s really light, too, and the textured handle is designed so that you can use it in the shower without it slipping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our hair extension brush range is specially designed using a mix of boar bristles and flexible nylon pins. These glide through both natural hair and extensions gently so you’re detangling without the risk of pulling out or damaging your bonds.

As long as you’re using the right sort of brush for hair extensions — one of ours! —  it’s perfectly safe to brush and detangle your hair extensions when they’re wet.

Our brushes are specially designed to glide through even the thickest hair without tugging or pulling, which means you can use them with hair extensions without any risk of the tape or bonds being damaged.

We’ve designed our brush for hair extensions range to be flexible enough to be used on both human and synthetic hair extensions.

If you want your brush to stay both hygienic and effective, you should regularly remove any hair trapped in the bristles and wash it warm water and shampoo, before rinsing and drying. There’s no hard and fast and rules as to how often you do this, but we usually suggest once a month. You can also use our Happy Hair Brush Cleaning Tool to keep your brush at its best.

Customer reviews
This is the second of these brushes I have bought. I bought one initially for my then 3 year old who hated having her hair brushed. She loved this brush. No pulling, no tears. She has extremely fine toddler hair and it doesn't yank it or pull it. I've now bought a second one for myself. My fine, thin hair loves it, I love the massaging bristles too.

I have very thick wavy hair that knots easily, same with my toddler, I didn’t know what to expect when it came to this brush but now our hair now only takes a minute or so to brush out completely and it doesn’t frizz which means we keep our curls and no more tears.

Amazing, amazing brush! I bought this for my toddler but now we share. We take turns brushing each others hair because it doesn’t hurt at all. Have told all my friends and family that they need a Happy Hair Brush in their lives.

Brilliant!! My toddler hated having her hair brushed. But not anymore!!! She calls it her “special brush” and now it’s not a wrestling match to brush her hair, especially after we’ve just washed it! Thank you Happy Hair Brush!
