Hair Detangling made easier!

Best Fine Hair Detangling Guide

If you or your kids have fine hair, you’ll know all too well how quickly it can become tangled — and just how difficult and painful it can be to get those tangles out. You can even end up damaging your hair if you don’t have the right fine hair brush for the job.

Why you need a fine hair brush

If you don’t have a gentle brush for fine hair you’re only going to make the tangles — and all the trouble they cause — even worse. Fine hair is thinner and more fragile than other types of hair, so brushing it with the wrong sort of brush can damage it or cause it to thin. It can also lead to excessive frizz!

That’s why we’ve created our unique range of fine hair brushes. Featuring gentle nylon pins and soft boar bristles, our brushes are designed to detangle fine hair without pulling or snapping it, while ensuring the natural oil your scalp produces is spread throughout your hair, especially important if you have a sensitive scalp.

Top tips for detangling fine hair

We’ve put together a quick guide for anyone who wants to make the business of brushing and detangling fine hair a less traumatic, more enjoyable experience for all.

Try to detangle before washing

Taking the time to remove as many knots as possible before you wash your hair will mean less matting and reduce those painful post-shower tangles. Try to start at the bottom and work your way up.

Use a detangle shampoo and conditioner

If tangles trouble you, using a detangling shampoo and conditioner will make getting rid of the knots and frizz quicker and easier. Not only does it make it easier to comb and unravel, but our hair care range moisturises and softens fine hair. It smells really good, too.

Dry fine hair with a hair towel

After detangling and washing, the last thing you want is re-tangle it all over again ! But that’s what can happen if you use a cloth bath towel to dry your hair. Instead, we recommend using an absorbent hair towel, and rather than rubbing dry, you use it to wrap your hair, or blot it dry.

When you brush fine hair, start at the ends

Fine hair is more likely to break when brushing, so you need to take extra care. Our solution is to start at the ends, and then work your way up to the top. But you will need patience! Be as gentle as you can and don’t tug — if you have the right fine hair brush, you can let it do the work for you.

Use the right brush for fine hair

We have created a range of gentle brushes just for both kids and adults with fine hair.

  • The Original Happy Hair Brush: Perfect for both fine hair and sensitive scalps, this unique fine hair brush combines five designs in one and is made to glide through knots with the minimum of fuss. The Original Happy Hair Brush is ideal for both kids and adults with fine hair that tangles easily, is kind to your hair scalp, and can be used when hair is both wet and dry.
  • The Mother Brush: The Mother Brush is the ideal brush for anyone with long, fine hair. Larger than our Original brush, it’s designed to glide through hair without pulling, untangling knots and massaging your scalp along the way. This is only fine hair brush we know that can actually make detangling fine hair a pleasure!
  • Mini Happy Hair Brush: Combining five different hair brushes in one, the Mini Happy Hair Brush is compact and colourful, making it ideal for taking to school or on holiday, or for brushing younger children’s hair. Although smaller than our other brushes, the Mini Happy Hair Brush is tough enough to tackle tangles in any type of hair, gliding through knots in fine hair that’s either wet or dry. It’s perfect for sensitive scalps too, gently massaging as it goes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Although over-brushing with an everyday hair brush can damage and break fine hair, our unique gentle brush fine hair range is designed to make it safe to brush as often as you like. That’s because our fine hair brushes have been created specifically to glide through knots and tangles without pulling and tugging, so they can be used by anyone with fine hair.

Frizz? Split ends? Sore scalp? Broken hair strands? Any or all of these are signs that you’re using the wrong brush. Likewise, if it feels like your hair is being tugged or pulled as you brush, making brushing a painful process rather than a pleasure, it’s time to make a change!

You sure can. Our brushes are specially designed to be used on both wet and dry hair, gently untangling knots without breaking or damaging even the finest hair.

It doesn’t take much for dirt, hair and other debris to build up on your brush, especially if you’re brushing your hair pretty often. We’d recommend giving your brush the once-over every month, giving it a long soak with soap or shampoo, and then using our Happy Hair Brush Cleaning Tool to get it back to pristine condition.

We’re not just about fine hair brushes — we also have a great range of shampoos, conditioners, repair sprays and more that are perfect for keeping fine hair tangle free and looking at its best. We’d recommend checking out our Happy Haircare Bundle as a great place to start.

Customer reviews
This is the second of these brushes I have bought. I bought one initially for my then 3 year old who hated having her hair brushed. She loved this brush. No pulling, no tears. She has extremely fine toddler hair and it doesn't yank it or pull it. I've now bought a second one for myself. My fine, thin hair loves it, I love the massaging bristles too.

I have very thick wavy hair that knots easily, same with my toddler, I didn’t know what to expect when it came to this brush but now our hair now only takes a minute or so to brush out completely and it doesn’t frizz which means we keep our curls and no more tears.

Amazing, amazing brush! I bought this for my toddler but now we share. We take turns brushing each others hair because it doesn’t hurt at all. Have told all my friends and family that they need a Happy Hair Brush in their lives.

Brilliant!! My toddler hated having her hair brushed. But not anymore!!! She calls it her “special brush” and now it’s not a wrestling match to brush her hair, especially after we’ve just washed it! Thank you Happy Hair Brush!
